Case Study: Risk Management Matters

After years of helping our Insurance program develop a printed Risk Management Matters newsletter for our districts, we suggested taking the newsletter digital instead. By doing this, we’ve reduced the number of design hours needed as well as print and mailing costs. Here’s how we did it:

  1. We created a new category in the newsroom for Insurance and Safety with a newsletter signup form at the top: https://www.esd112.org/category/news/insurance-safety-news/
  2. Insurance submitted relevant stories that we added to the newsroom on a regular basis
  3. We added a newsletter signup on all of the insurance pages
  4. We created a simple postcard notifying our contacts that our format is changing to digital and invited them to sign up to the newsletter
  5. Insurance emailed their contacts inviting them to sign up
  6. Once we had a good subscriber base, we sent out our first issue in March, 2019

We currently have 75 subscribers and have sent out three issues with the goal of sending three issues per year. In addition to the articles, the newsletter highlighted relevant upcoming events as well as insurance programs.

More than two dozen insurance and safety articles are available on the website at any time and are searchable by keyword as well as indexed by Google making the reach much more than just the subscriber base. The goal for the upcoming year is to get more subscribers and keep providing them with great content.

“I love the digital newsletter; it is less time-consuming for me and is certainly less expensive than printing and distributing 500 paper copies. The appearance and format is very professional looking. I get a lot of newsletters sent to me and ours is one of the best from a visual standpoint.”
