Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses, like the flu, is more important than ever. ESD 112 is unable to offer flu shot clinics on site but wants to support employees in getting the flu shot. We are providing this information to assist you in understanding the benefits of having a flu shot and where to go to get one.
Below is some information from the CDC about the flu vaccine and importance of protecting yourself this season!
What is the Flu Shot?
The influenza vaccine (or Flu Shot) helps protect against seasonal influenza viruses that circulate the general population annually. Generally, the flu is a mild illness, but for those with underlying health conditions, or who are elderly, pregnant, or very young, the flu can cause serious complications.
Why is it important?
There are two important reasons for annual vaccination:
- Flu viruses often change, so each year’s flu vaccines are made to protect against the flu viruses expected to cause the most illness that year
- A person’s immune protection from vaccination declines over time. It is best to get vaccinated soon after the vaccine becomes available each autumn.
Is the vaccine expensive?
Most insurances will cover the cost of the flu vaccine. If you do not have insurance the cost can range between $20 – $50. If you or your dependents are enrolled in an ESD 112 medical plan, the cost of the vaccine is covered. You may be subject to a copay, so check with the clinic or doctor’s office first.
Where can I go to get the vaccine?
At your doctor’s office
If you have health insurance, most doctors will cover the total cost of getting the flu shot. That means you won’t have to pay for a copay either. (Just call ahead to make sure your primary care physician has the flu vaccine in stock before you go.)
At an Urgent Care Clinic
Many urgent care offices will offer flu vaccines and will even provide them for free if you can’t make it to your primary care physician to get your shot.
At your local Pharmacy
Walgreens, CVS Pharmacy, Rite Aid, Target, Walmart, Fred Meyer and Safeway pharmacies offer flu shots to the public, and it’s usually at no cost to you with most health insurance plans. (CVS and Target are offering a $5 coupon to their stores when you get your shot.) Some prefer you schedule an appointment so call ahead to the store you’re interested in visiting. Fred Meyer is offering online scheduling on their website.
