Guest Speaker: Sam Robinson, Vice Chairman, Chinook Indian Nation
Non-federally recognized tribes are tribes that are not recognized by the US government as sovereign nations. One local tribe is Chinook Indian Nation who has been battling for 179 years for federal recognition. Come and learn more about the history of the Chinook Indian Nation, and the importance of the federal recognition that they are currently denied.
Sam did a great job educating us on the beautiful culture of the Chinook Indian Nation, and explaining why it’s so important that they be granted Federal recognition! If you didn’t get to attend his session, we’ve added some really great resources here:
- Chinook Nation’s beautiful description of the Intertribal Canoe Journey experience
- Why Federal recognition is so important to the CIN
- Learn more about the Confluence Project, an organization that uses art and storytelling to preserve the history of the Columbia River system, as told by Indigenous voices.
- Also, on the Confluence Project website, you will find a fantastic library of Indigenous history and living culture.
