Summer Safety – Enjoy the Sun (Safely)

Mom applying sunscreen to daughter
- Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, with SPF 30 or higher. This lowers your risk of cancer, sun damage, and signs of early aging.
- For best results, apply about 15-20 minutes before sun exposure.
- Reapply your sunscreen every two hours, or more often if you are swimming or sweating (water-resistant options are also available!)
- Apply to all exposed skin areas, including ears, the back of your neck, and the tops of your feet.
- Wear sunglasses and other protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brim hats.
- Seek shade whenever possible (peak sun hours are 10AM to 4PM).
- Stay hydrated!
- More information can be found here (FDA website).
Water Safety Tips

Lifejackets on a boat
- Always supervise children, especially younger children, and use the buddy system whenever possible.
- Learn to swim (at least the basics). Swimming is a fun and healthy activity at any time of the year.
- Only swim in designated areas only, preferably where lifeguards are present.
- Wear life jackets when boating, fishing, doing water sports, or if you are not a strong swimmer.
- Avoid alcohol if you are planning to swim.
- Learn CPR to be prepared to help in an emergency.
- In open water, be aware of potential dangers like strong currents, shallow or unknown depths, and hazardous weather conditions, such as storms or lightning.
- Check the local weather forecast before you go.
