Dear ESD 112 Staff,

I wanted to let you know that Barbara Lomas, Associate Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, has announced plans to retire at the end of June, 2016.

Barbara has been with the ESD for 20 years, having begun her career here as the Director of School Improvement and Professional Development. Prior to joining the ESD, Barbara was an elementary school principal both in Washington and Arizona. During her tenure at ESD 112, Barbara has served many different roles and her contributions to the ESD and the Teaching and Learning department are greatly valued. (She even stepped in as Superintendent of Mill A School during the 2012-13 school year!)

Barbara has been a tremendous support to me and Cabinet.  We rely significantly on her expertise to guide the services that our school districts need to improve teacher effectiveness and student learning. Barbara is a highly respected leader in local, regional and statewide education circles for her ability to successfully lead the implementation of state initiatives through OSPI. At the state level she serves as a champion of the Regional Literacy Coordinators and is an integral part of the School Accreditation process through the Association of Educational Service Districts (AESD).

Under her leadership, numerous programs have flourished, including STEM, DigitalEdge and Google Services, the Teacher Principal Evaluation Program (TPEP), and Math, Science and English Language Arts programs. Barbara has also helped secure thousands of dollars in grants, including REACH, the 21st Century Afterschool program for districts in the Gorge; BEST (Beginning Educator Support Team) and most recently the PREVENT! Coalition’s grant to provide education and awareness about marijuana use. She developed the Supplemental Education Services (EXceL program) in response to district need for tutoring services for students in low performing schools.  She has been a key leader and supporter of the expansion of SWCCC and ECEAP early learning programs. She also facilitates the Regional Teaching and Learning Leadership Team, which consists of Assistant Superintendent and Curriculum Directors from around the region.

Above all, Barbara is appreciated for her skills as a seasoned problem-solver, listener and coach. She understands the complexities of ESDs and since the day she was hired has been a valuable contributor to our mission.

Barbara’s position will be posted early next week.  She will work closely with Cabinet and her department managers to facilitate a smooth transition to new leadership. She remains deeply committed to ESD 112 and will be missed tremendously when she leaves to enjoy retirement!
