This September, National Preparedness Month (NPM) will focus on planning, with an overarching theme “Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead. You Can”.

We should all take action to prepare! We are all able to help first responders in our community by learning how to respond during an emergency and what to do when disaster strikes not only where we live but also at work and places we visit. The goal of NPM is to increase the overall number of individuals, families, and communities that engage in preparedness actions at home, work, business, school, and place of worship. Each week the ESD 112 Safety Committee will send information and resources to assist you in preparing yourself for a potential disaster.

Making a Plan

FEMA has templates that will help lead discussion with your family about how to communicate if a disaster strikes and develop a plan you all can follow.

Emergency Supplies

After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for at least 72 hours. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. Once you take a look at the basic items, consider what unique needs your family might have, such as supplies for pets, or seniors.
