Luncheon & Costume Contest: 12–2pm
Trick or Treating: 3–4:30pm

Thanks to the 80+ ESD staff members who filled out our Halloween celebration survey! Overwhelming consensus was for an old-school, in-person Hootenanny like we used to have pre-pandemic. New to the ESD? Not to worry, we’ve compiled a Hootenanny FAQ below.

New for 2022: Video Submissions

While most of Hootenanny will be like years prior to 2020, we also wanted to include our staff that can’t be in the office that day or those who work in the field. That was one wonderful thing about virtual celebrations in 2020 and 2021. This year, we will be inviting staff to submit a short video of their costume or skit that we will play during the live event, so that remote staff can participate in the costume contest. All videos sent in and those recorded during the live event will also be shared afterward. Look for more details about how to enter the costume contest to come in October!

Hootenanny FAQ

What is “Hootenanny”?

It’s a hoot! Hootenanny is a long-standing ESD tradition that celebrates Halloween with fun activities for staff and children. The staff-only luncheon is a costume contest, which has also evolved to include fun skits. There are prizes for best group skit, best group costume, and best solo costume. Later in the afternoon, families with children are invited to bring them to the ESD to trick or treat in the building at stations decorated by staff.

Can I see examples of past costumes and skits?

You sure can! If you search “hootenanny” on GOesd, you’ll find a wealth of past photos and recordings. Here are a few of our favorites:
